Statement
Students using crutches cannot board a school bus with the use of crutches, due to the high risk of serious injury.
A student using crutches can continue to ride regular busing if the crutches can be handed off and the student is able to safely mount and dismount the bus stairs without the use of the crutches. If the student is wearing a walking boot, they may still ride the bus, provided they can independently use the stairs without assistance. In both cases, the crutches or walking boot must not impede the safety or movement of other students on the bus.
For students that are eligible for transportation and cannot mount and dismount the bus stairs, STSWR will arrange for alternate transportation to be provided.
Procedure
When a student is injured and must use crutches to assist in mobility, alternative transportation may be arranged and provided.
A Transportation Special Request Form must be completed and submitted to the School Principal for approval by the Superintendent.
The goal of STSWR is to have alternative transportation in place within a day following approval of the special request.
