New to kindergarten?

Follow these steps to get started!

Check transportation eligibility

Eligibility for transportation is based on the distance from your home to the school and other factors like program type or special needs. You can review the full guidelines to see if your child qualifies for bus service.

First rider program

We understand that the transition to kindergarten can be both exciting and overwhelming for students and families. The First Riders Program helps incoming kindergarten students feel confident about riding the school bus for the first time. This free session takes place once a year in early June and includes an interactive safety video, a bus safety demonstration, and a short bus ride.

Transportation information by mail

There is no registration for transportation. All students living in the bus zone are automatically assigned to the bus based on the address provided to the school. During the last week of August, transportation information for September is mailed directly to families of JK and SK students in the bus zone.

Sign up for delays and cancellations alerts

Our subscription service keeps you informed about bus delays and cancellations that affect your child’s route. You can choose email or text alerts and get notified as soon as updates are posted on the STSWR website. These alerts help you plan ahead, avoid last‑minute surprises, and know your child will get to and from school safely.

Access the Parent Portal

Find your student’s bussing details in the Parent Portal. Information for new school years is available starting in August every year, and data is refreshed regularly throughout the year. You can also subscribe to receive changes to your student’s route automatically.

Sign up for the subscription service

The subscription service sends alerts to your email or phone regarding bus delays and cancellations that affect your child’s route or school. Note that delays under 10 minutes are not reported, and you receive notifications as soon as they are updated on the STSWR website, which may not always be in real time. Signing up ensures you have the latest information to plan your day and to keep your child’s school journey worry-free.

Check out the Walk Zone

Our goal is that every child will have the chance to walk or wheel for part or all of their school journey, making active travel a part of their daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

My student is new to busing, what should I know for their first day?

Once you have received the busing information from your Parent Portal or from the school, you will know the assigned location and approximate time for the bus. Your student needs to be at the assigned location for the bus stop 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time.

Be sure traffic is clear if you need to cross any roadways.

Your student should line up to board the bus. For younger JK and SK students, we suggest they sit close to the bus driver at the front of the bus.

For more information on the responsibilities of different stakeholders see Roles and Responsibilities.

Aren’t the walking distances too far for younger students?

An average Kindergartener can walk one kilometre in twenty minutes, and stamina for walking (and all day long) improves quickly with daily practice. Often, younger students have a harder time sitting still than they do moving for that amount of time. In fact, 20 minutes of physical activity at the beginning of the day can boost metabolism, increase mental focus for up to four hours, and help your student sleep better at night.

What school do I attend and am I eligible for busing?

To determine which school your student should attend, use: Which School Do I Attend?
To determine your student’s Transportation Eligibility, use: Can I Ride a Bus?

Can my student be picked-up or dropped off from a childcare address/babysitter?

Yes. As long as the childcare/babysitter is located at an address that is eligible for transportation from your student’s school, and the arrangements are consistent (i.e. always pick-up from the designated address and/or dropped off at a designated address).

Click here to see if your student is eligible for transportation from their childcare/babysitter address.

To request an alternate pick-up or drop-off, please contact your school and provide the alternate childcare/babysitter address. Once approved, you will receive updated transportation information.

My student is eligible for busing; do I need to notify anyone that my student will not be riding?

To ensure that your student is not mistakenly placed on a bus, please contact us for the Do Not Ride Form. To have your student back on the bus after being removed, and if your student is still eligible for transportation, please complete the same digital form again.

Please note: If your student will occasionally be riding the bus, do not complete this form, it is only for students who will never be riding the bus. For safety reasons, it is highly recommended that young children have a consistent travel arrangement.

How will my student know which bus to get on at school? (dupe, delete and replace)

All school vehicles have signs displayed in the window at the front and/or side of the bus indicating the route number. To find your student’s route number:

Click on Parent Portal
Change the School Year to the year you are looking for
Enter your student’s Ontario Education Number (OEN) – numbers only, no space, no dash.
Please note that OENs are printed on report cards or you can request it from your students school
Enter your student’s birth date (dd/mm/yyyy)
Enter your street number (house number only)
Select your student’s school
Additionally:

The school issues a kindergarten (kindie) tag to each kindergarten student. Tags are fastened on backpacks with the PM stop location and route number facing outward. This allows staff to assist students in boarding the correct bus.
Although it varies from school to school, bus lists are sometimes printed to support the teacher on duty in directing students toward the appropriate bus.
