Kindergarten Information for Families

Parent Portal login Can I Ride a Bus?

Welcome to Kindergarten!

If your student is starting Kindergarten for the first time this year and will be taking the bus, this page has everything you need to know!

Can My Student Ride the Bus to School?

Eligibility for transportation is based on the distance from your home to the school and other factors like program type or special needs.

First Riders Program

The First Riders Program helps incoming kindergarten students feel confident riding the school bus for the first time.

This free program runs once a year on the first Wednesday of June and includes a safety video, a bus safety demonstration, and a short bus ride.

How to View Transportation Information Online

There is no registration for transportation. All students living in the bus zone are automatically assigned to the bus based on the address provided to the school. At the end of August, transportation information for September will be available in your Parent Portal at www.stswr.ca.

Sign up for delays and cancellations alerts

Our subscription service keeps you informed about bus delays and cancellations that affect your child’s route. You can choose email or text alerts and get notified as soon as updates are posted on the STSWR website. These alerts help you plan ahead, avoid last‑minute surprises, and know your child will get to and from school safely.

Check out the Walk Zone

Our goal is that every child will have the chance to walk or wheel for part or all of their school journey, making active travel a part of their daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

The information I received/what is in my Parent Portal is wrong. How do I change it?

Any information changes must be made at the students school. This includes adress changes, name changes, contact changes, email changes, etc. Please contact your student school directly. STSWR cannot make any changes to student school records.

Aren’t the walking distances too far for younger students?

An average Kindergartener can walk one kilometre in twenty minutes, and stamina for walking (and all day long) improves quickly with daily practice. Often, younger students have a harder time sitting still than they do moving for that amount of time. In fact, 20 minutes of physical activity at the beginning of the day can boost metabolism, increase mental focus for up to four hours, and help your student sleep better at night.

My student is new to busing, what should I know for their first day?

Once you have received the busing information from your Parent Portal (www.stswr.ca) or from the school, you will know the assigned location and approximate time for the bus. Your student needs to be at the assigned location for the bus stop at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pick up time.

Be sure traffic is clear if you need to cross any roadways.

Your student should line up to board the bus. For younger JK and SK students, we suggest they sit close to the bus driver at the front of the bus.

For more information on the responsibilities of different stakeholders see Roles and Responsibilities.

How will my JK/SK student know which bus to take? Will school staff know too?

In the afternoon, Kindergarten students riding the bus home will receive a coloured ‘Kindie Tag’ from their teacher. This tag, attached to their backpack, shows the student’s bus number and stop information.

Colours (including white) help students quickly identify their bus. All school vehicles (excluding taxis) have signs displayed in the window on the front and/or side of the vehicle, and drivers also have a list of students expected on their route. To find your student’s route information, create or login to your Parent Portal account.

Teachers use the tag to ensure students board the correct bus in the afternoon, and drivers use it to confirm each student is on the right route.
Although it varies from school to school, bus lists are sometimes printed at school to support the teacher on duty in directing students toward the appropriate bus.

Can my student be picked-up or dropped off from a childcare address/babysitter?

Yes. As long as the childcare/babysitter is located at an address that is eligible for transportation from your student’s school, and the student is transported to and from the same location each day.

Click here to see if your student is eligible for transportation from their childcare/babysitter address.

To request an alternate pick-up or drop-off, please contact your school and provide the alternate childcare/babysitter address. Once approved, you will receive updated transportation information.

My student is eligible for busing but won’t be riding; do I need to notify anyone that my student will not be riding?

To ensure that your student is not mistakenly placed on a bus, please complete the ‘Decline or Reinstate Transportation’ digital form. To have your student back on the bus after being removed, and if your student is still eligible for transportation, please complete the same digital form again.

Please note: If your student will occasionally be riding the bus, do not complete this form. For safety reasons, it is highly recommended that young children have a consistent travel arrangement.
