In the event of a catastrophic emergency situation, the following procedure should be followed. These emergencies would include, but are not limited to; collisions causing serious injury or death (to the other passenger of a vehicle, on board passengers), on bus incidents causing serious injury or death (fight causing bodily harm, weapon used), outside bus incidents causing serious injury or death (pedestrian hit by bus, student falls under bus).
Critical Injury being defined as;
- if it involves the fracture of a leg or arm but not a finger or toe. The Ministry of Labour interprets this provision as including the fracture of a wrist, hand, ankle or foot – e.any such fracture would constitute a critical injury if it is of a serious nature. While the fracture of a single finger or single toe does not constitute a critical injury, the ministry takes the position that the fracture of more than one finger or more than one toe does constitute a critical injury if it is an injury of a serious nature.
- if it involves the amputation of a leg, arm, hand or foot but not a finger or toe. While the amputation of a single finger or single toe does not constitute a critical injury, the ministry takes the position that the amputation of more than one finger or more than one toe does constitute a critical injury if it is an injury of a serious nature.
Premise
Bus Collision Causing Critical Injury or Death
- Collect as much information as possible from the Operator when they contact the office (Route, School, Students injured, time, location). Ensure the online collision form is posted so that the e-mail is sent to all School Board parties. The operator would be contacting emergency services when the collision occurs.
- Ensure that Operator management is going to the scene of the collision to provide updates as needed.
- Let management and staff inside the office know of the incident, preferably by collecting all staff and talking inside the office. This is much quicker than e-mail.
- Management on site contacts the emergency line at the correct School Board.
- STSWR staff will contact the Principal at the school to let them know about the incident and the severity of the situation.
- STSWR staff will contact the Communications department at the School Board. Give them the details that they require, as they are trained in handling these situations.
- STSWR staff will contact the Superintendent of the school involved.
- Media inquiries should be passed to the School Board communication department. Updates may require cell contact with management.
