Pedestrian safety can be worked into other subject areas to reinforce the key messages of the Sidewalk Smarts program and allow students to communicate what they have learned to others.

Grade 3: “Forces That Move.” Assess road safety devices & their impact. Think about what causes an object to move, stop or change course. How are these forces used in their daily lives?
Grade 4: “Light & Sound.” Discuss what safety devices use light & sound; how could they be safer? Consider the impact of these devices on the environment. Consider all perspectives. Describe how different objects/materials interact with light and sound.

Grade 3: “Then & Now” – 1780 – 1850 in Canada: Compare ways of life at the beginning of the 19th century and now. Describe key differences. Maps, the Globe & Graphing: Extract information from your graphs, or make them for specific purposes. Construct maps including thematic maps. Use the maps to generate data and ideas.
Grade 4: “Early Societies” – 1500 CE Canada: Compare early societies (including First Nation & Inuit societies) with today. Note differences. Maps, the Globe & Graphing: Extract info from climate graphs. Use double bar graphs to show comparisons within a region. Analyse and construct thematic maps for specific purposes.
