CAA School Safety Patrol Program

The CAA School Safety Patrol Program training takes place each September at Budd Park in Kitchener, ON and prepares students for their important roles as Bus and Standing Foot Patrollers. Training is delivered by CAA in partnership with the Waterloo Region Police Service, local Fire Services (Cambridge, Kitchener, and Waterloo), Region of Waterloo Paramedic Services, and STSWR.

Students receive training on how to stay safe on the bus, at school crossings, in parking lots, and while walking to and from school. This hands-on training equips them with the knowledge and confidence to support their peers and contribute to a safe school environment.

Becoming a Safety Patroller is more than a responsibility, it is a real-world leadership opportunity open to thousands of students across the region.

Bus Patrols

Bus patrollers assist students with boarding and disembarking safely. During the bus ride, they keep a watchful eye, reminding students to stay seated and maintain clear aisles. Bus patrollers are familiar with emergency equipment locations and they communicate with the driver when necessary.

Standing Foot Patrols

Standing foot patrollers ensure safe street crossings and secure pick-up/drop-off points. They do not enter or direct traffic, but they do identify safe gaps in traffic and keep students from entering roadways until it is safe. Foot patrollers may also lend a helping hand in higher traffic school areas, ensuring parents and children can safely navigate the busy curbside.

Why is CAA Involved?

Since the early 1900s, when the invention of the automobile made roads busier, CAA has been taking action to prevent children from being injured on their way to and from school.

A steady increase in traffic in and around schools means the CAA School Safety Patrol program is more relevant than ever.

CAA believes in giving valuable and practical traffic safety skills to local communities. The CAA School Safety Patrol program is just one of the many ways CAA commits to community action and awareness around road safety.
